The propeller beanie was the creation of noted science fiction writer and author, Ray Nelson. He first attached a propeller to a brimless cap, or a beanie cap as it was known, at a science fiction convention in 1947. The propeller beanie soon became a symbol of science fiction fanatics. Bob Clampett, the famous cartoonist who was responsible for the original Bugs Bunny and Daffy duck cartoons, was also a science fiction fan and after seeing this new style cap he created a cartoon character named Beany who wore a propeller beanie cap on his head. Beany was paired with ' Cecil the Sea Sick Sea Serpent ' and they starred in ' Beany and Cecil' cartoons and comic books. In 1949 'Time For Beany' became a puppet show starring Stan Freberg. It became the first big hit nationally televised children's show. This show spurred the first nationwide sales craze for propeller beanie caps. For the next quarter century as the propeller beanie cap craze faded, the brimless cap remained the standard image of what was known as the beanie cap. Starting in 1976, Interstellar Propeller began the next phase of propeller caps by attaching propellers to multi-colored baseball caps. This innovation proved popular and has changed the image of the propeller beanie to that of brimmed hat with a propeller, although it is still referred to as a 'beanie cap'. Since 1976 Interstellar Propeller has sold nearly two million beanie caps. Although their success has resulted in a number of 'knock off' brands, they remain the industry standard.
